Planet Cazmo Founder Michael Levine on Linking Up with Tommy Mottola

Michael Levine, cofounder of Pileated Pictures and Planet Cazmoyesterday announced a partnership with one of the music industry’s biggest names, music producer and former studio executive Tommy Mottola.

Virtual Worlds News spoke with Levine to gain some additional insight into the alliance and how it will be felt among the estimated 3 million Planet Cazmo users.

Virtual Worlds News: First off, congratulations on the news. And can you tell us: how do get a meeting with Tommy Mottola?

Michael Levine: We have a long history working with the music industry, from our service work in the early part of the decade with my online gaming and animation agency Pileated Pictures, as well as other personal contacts. That led us to Tommy. It’s a small world.

VWN: Who does Tommy represent currently?

Tommy-mottolaML: Tommy (pictured, left) and his company Mottola Co. work with several emerging artists and have had a major influence on many of the acts that have been coming to Cazmo recently — and ones you will continue to see over the next several months.

VWN: Are all his artists fair game for Planet Cazmo concerts?

ML: Yes. For example, they have a new artist, Kate Earl, who we will be doing a concert for on Cazmo. We’ll time it with her iTunes “Single of the Week” in mid-August.

VWN: When can users expect the first “produced with Tommy Mottola” in-world Planet Cazmo concert?

ML: In a way, it’s already been happening. But now that it’s official, we plan to add on more bells and whistles as we go. Plus, we have plans for a major event next year, the likes of which have never been done online before.

VWN: Tommy talks about the “enormous potential” of the Planet Cazmo platform. Today, with this news in hand, how does it change your view of the site’s potential?

ML: It doesn’t change my view. It reinforces and validates my position that Cazmo is becoming the dominant music player in the virtual world space. No one in this space is doing music like we are.

It’s pretty shocking when you think about how much Disney and others have vested in that space in other mediums. But where is Disney’s online footprint when it comes to leveraging its music assets in an online space? This is where we come in.

VWN: What makes music so well-suited for brand extensions into virtual worlds?

ML: It works on so many levels. It’s the ultimate community and fan building tool. It’s a social network times 10, because the kids form relationships with other kids that have a “physical” sense through their avatars and other collectibles. And it’s not just the typical Tween acts [we focus on]. We will also be announcing deals with some major classic acts as well — and soon. Tweens and teens are discovering [these acts]. Planet Cazmo is a way to introduce them to a whole new generation of music.

VWN: Did the death of Michael Jackson impact user activity in Planet Cazmo?

ML: We saw a definite traffic spike surrounding the tribute we ran. Our fans absolutely know who he was and were affected by it. They used Cazmo as a place to gather and share their feelings. All in all, a very well-appreciated response.

VWN: Who is in your rear-view mirror?

ML: I tend to look ahead more than behind. I am much more focused on getting to the level of being the top player in the space than worrying about new products coming out, partly as I think it’s become that much harder to get to the level we have gotten to, for anyone newly entering the field, that is. The space is already so over crowded, and we see again and again, even from the biggest companies with the most money, that a true, stable, persistent multiplayer world in the browser takes time to build … and it’s not easy.

VWN: Can you bring VWN readers up to date on Planet Cazmo stats? Registered users, active users, other meaningful metrics you care to share?

ML: This isn’t something we share publicly at this point. I can say all our numbers are steadily on the rise.

VWN: Thanks for your time, Michael.
